After practice: what worked, what to fix next time

What’s on it

  • Team, date, start and end time, field, coaches and players expected.

  • Equipment, and a review box for after practice.

Rather do it on your phone?

TryoutSheet is this sheet on a phone: tap a player’s number, tap a score, film the rep. It works at the field without signal, adds up the stations with your weights, ranks the group, and carries the players you pick into your roster.

Start freeFree for one tryout of up to 25 players.

How to use it

  1. Pick one focus per practice (e.g. “throwing to the right base”) and make most blocks feed it.
  2. Keep blocks short: 10–15 minutes for kids, up to 20 for older players. Stations with small groups beat one long line.
  3. A simple shape for 90 minutes: warm-up and throwing (15), defense stations (25), hitting stations (30), a game-like drill (15), wrap-up (5).
  4. Give every coach a block to run and a key point to look for, so nobody stands around holding a bucket.
  5. Fill in the review box the same day, while you remember what worked.

Questions

How long should a softball practice be?

60–75 minutes for young players, 90 minutes to two hours for older ones. Shorter practices with more reps per player beat long ones with lines.

What goes in a practice plan?

A focus, time blocks with minutes, what happens in each block, who runs it and the coaching points. Plus equipment, so the bucket of balls is at the field.

Where do I keep plans for the whole season?

Keep the filled-in sheets in a binder by date. TryoutSheet keeps each player’s profile and coach notes for the season, so you can see who needs which work.
